CCTV footage appeared to show the man kick and punch his victim in the face before she drops to the floor appearing to hit her head during the attack in Pittsburgh.
A group of young men then walk up to the victim as she seemingly lays unconscious on the pavement and take pictures of her with their mobile phones rather than calling 911.
US police told KDKA news that one of the group laid on the floor to “take a selfie” with a the victim.
Her mobile phone was also stolen by bystanders following the attack, they added.
“They don’t treat animals like that. They wouldn’t treat a dog that way,” the victim’s mother said on Thursday, according to KDKA. “It’s disgusting. My daughter needs help.”
The incident was caught on camera more than a month ago, in Beechview, Pittsburgh.
The police source told KDKA: “They didn’t help her. They took what looks like her phone while she’s out cold. Nobody called 911 to help her.”
The source added that the group later comes back and “a kid lays beside her and takes a selfie”.
The woman reportedly lay on the pavement until she regained consciousness.
She is reported to be a drug addict who has previously been arrested on drug charges. The woman has been admitted to Gateway Rehab facility for treatment.
Investigations by Pittsburgh Police continue.
