ArmaLite transferred the manufacturing rights of the AR-10 and AR-15 to the Colt Company in 1959, and has since provided these models to various armies throughout the world, including the Air Force, Army and Marine Corps of the United States.
The AR-15 was adopted by the United States Army under the designation M16. However, Colt continues to use the AR-15 trade name for its AR-15A / A2 semi automatic variants, especially for government and private agencies.
In the United States of America, it is currently the most bought semiautomatic rifle by civilians for their self-defense as allowed by the second amendment of the American constitution.
